SelfHealthInsurance.com helps people who buy their own health insurance, or are trying to figure out their options, understand how coverage works. We cover Marketplace plans, Medicaid, COBRA, Medicare, coverage through work and the questions that come up along the way, in plain English.
Who’s behind the site
SelfHealthInsurance.com is run by James Shaffer, an insurance professional and writer who has owned many insurance businesses. He has written insurance articles for consumers across the web, and he oversees everything we publish here. You can find him on LinkedIn.
How we write and update our articles
- We base our answers on official and primary sources, like HealthCare.gov, Medicare.gov, CMS, the IRS, the U.S. Department of Labor and state insurance departments, along with research from groups like KFF.
- We list our sources at the end of each article so you can check them.
- We double-check details that change often, like prices, income limits and enrollment dates, and each article shows when it was last reviewed.
- When rules change, we update our articles. If you spot something that’s out of date, please let us know.
How we make money
SelfHealthInsurance.com is free to use. We’re not an insurance company and we don’t sell insurance. Quotes and offers on the site come from third-party partners, who may pay us when you click an offer. That doesn’t change what we write.
What our articles are and aren’t
Our articles are general information to help you understand your options. They aren’t legal, tax or medical advice. For decisions about your own coverage, check with your insurer, the Marketplace, or a licensed agent or broker.
